Outfit Post: Caped Crusader

Superheroes are cool. They save lives, they fly, they have super human strength. Even if their outfits are questionable (underwear-like bottoms over tights?), there’s no arguing their coolness factor.

The redeeming quality of a superhero outfit? The cape. It’s the one item that distinguishes a superhero from a hipster with an addiction to American Apparel spandex.

That’s the thing about a cape. It can turn even a blah outfit into something a little dramatic. Even when I wear the same basic outfit for three days straight (jeans and a striped tee), somehow a cape elevates the look.

Thank you cape, for getting me one step closer to superhero status.

Bruce Weber for Shinola

Bruce Weber via Shinola
It’s rare that my two loves - Fashion and Detroit - collide in such a perfect and beautiful way. Fashion photographer Bruce Weber teamed up with the Detroit manufacturing superstar Shinola to - in the words of the fine folks at Shinola - "explore the beauty of manufacturing, while capturing the spirit of Detroit.”

What resulted is a beautiful campaign filled with real Detroiters (alongside All-American supermodel Carolyn Murphy) showcasing the spirit of the city we love. Not unlike Shinola's craftsmanship, Weber's photographs prove that beauty really is in the details.

Definitely check out the full article from Shinola and also this piece from Vogue.

If Weber's name sounds familiar to Detroit, he first captured the Motor City in 2006 in an incredible spread for W Magazine with the iconic Kate Moss as his muse (Check out the Model D article). To say I am a fan of Weber's work is an understatement - that copy of W sat on my coffee table for years before finally getting moved to a more permanent spot on my bookshelf.

Outfit Post: V is for Victory

Honestly, I’m just not that into Valentine’s day.

I’m totally into romance, just not forced romance. Not the kind of “romance” that says just because it’s February 14th, I must get overdressed (it is like 10 degrees here) and spend an outrageous amount of money on overcooked steak. My preference? Something more low key and intimate.
And like the day, I prefer a more understated outfit as well.

On a day of over the top frill, I like to be a little bit unexpected with my fashion choices. Rather than donning a sexy red dress or bright pink everything, I prefer a more understated look. This year, in honor of the Polar Vortex that just won’t quit, I’ve decided to wear winter white. And because I’m not a total bitter cupid for the day, I’ve decided to add some bright red shoes for the occasion. And yes, some heart sunglasses.

After all, it is a day about celebrating love.

And in case anyone is wondering, B and I will be spending our Valentine’s day at the Cold Hearted: A Night to Support Clark Park event, practicing our moves (skating moves that is).

Food trucks, fire pits, and beer. Now that’s my kind of romance.

please ignore my pile of boots, gloves, and coat in the background. i live in michigan. these photoshoots get COLD.

Outfit Post: Peter Pilotto for Target

Target does it again.

Love it or hate it, but the megastore has once again teamed up with another high end designer for its newest collaboration - this time with the print loving design team Peter Pilotto. Bringing the masses their signature bright colors and mash up of prints, the Peter Pilotto for Target collection is definitely not for the sartorial wallflower.

Personally, I’m all for loud prints and blinding colors. I’ve seen enough grey this winter to last the rest of the year. Go bold or go home, right? But be warned, if you're hoping to add some of the designer discount pieces to your wardrobe, you better hurry to your local Target stores - last I checked, the entire collection had already sold out online.

I’m baaaack!

I know, I know. It’s been a year. Longer than a year. But The Closet Confessional is back and ready to rock. And nothing says "ready to rock" more than (faux) leather skinnies and a vintage white fur coat*. Polar Vortex, I’m ready for you.

Outfit Post: Who's Your Tiger?

This has been a big week for Detroit fans. After a slow and frustrating start, the Tigers managed to turn the season around and join the American League Division Series, ultimately beating the Oakland A's, keeping the Tigers hopes alive for a 2012 World Series title. In addition to the excitement of the games, it was also the end of Detroit Restaurant week. For this week's outfit, I wanted my clothes to reflect my support for the Tigers, but still be dinner appropriate for an upscale restaurant. I chose to forgo the jeans and team t-shirt look for the always classic blazer and jeans combo in the Tigers' orange and navy colors. Go Tigers!

Gold Rush

Gold Rush

Today, the cult fashion favorite Zara, finally launched Zara Home in it's US market. Like the brand's clothes, the home line includes classic, fun, and affordable decor items. While they offer a range of styles, it was the variety of gold accents that caught my eye and are the perfect way to add some glitz and glamour to your decor this holiday season.

Be sure to check out the site soon -- they are offering free shipping for the entire month of October!
